PRISM Case Study: Incident Reduction in Dementia Care

Setting

A 24-bed Dementia Care Unit operating within a larger residential care home with a total capacity of over 80 residents.

Evaluation Period

Comparative analysis was conducted between the initial three months following service implementation and the later periods of Q2 and Q3 in the first year.

Key Findings

The data revealed a significant reduction of 62.6% in the reporting of adverse events relating to occurrences of harm to a resident or occurrences of sub-standard care practices, including “near misses”, highlighting the positive impact of sustained delivery of the Care Protect PRISM service on safety outcomes and staff development within a dementia care setting.

Comparing PRISM to Self-Managed Systems and Communal Area Only Coverage

In a self-managed system, there is no external accountability, and nursing care is not subject to independent review. As a result, improvements to nursing care standards tend to be minimal. In contrast, PRISM introduces structured oversight and independent evaluation, driving measurable enhancements in care quality.
Systems that rely solely on communal area coverage lack oversight during the most vulnerable moments, particularly when care is delivered one-to-one in private spaces. This absence of supervision can compromise both resident safety and staff protection. PRISM addresses these gaps by ensuring comprehensive safeguards.
